Switch plates are the small wall covers that frame your light switches and outlets. Picking the right one is mostly about two things: how many gangs you need, and what type of device sits behind it. This short guide walks you through both so you can order the right plate the first time.
What Does “Gang” Mean?
A gang is one opening on a wall plate. A single-gang plate covers one switch or outlet. A two-gang plate covers two side-by-side devices, and so on. To figure out what you need, count the devices on a single wall box:
- 1-Gang: one switch or outlet (most bedrooms, hallways, single switches)
- 2-Gang: two devices (bathrooms with a switch and outlet)
- 3-Gang: three devices (common in kitchens and living rooms)
- 4-Gang and up: larger banks, often with dimmers or smart switches
Toggle, Decorator, or GFCI?
Each gang has to match the device behind it. The three common US types are:
- Toggle: the traditional narrow rectangular switch. Most older homes use these.
- Decorator (Rocker): a wider flat switch. Used by modern dimmers, smart switches, and paddle switches.
- GFCI: the rectangular opening on most kitchen and bathroom outlets with the test and reset buttons.
The plate opening has to match the device. A toggle switch needs a toggle plate, even if the plate size (1-gang, 2-gang) is the same.
Measure Twice
If you are replacing an existing plate, pull it off the wall and count the screws. US standard plates mount with the screws vertical and the long edges top to bottom. Any plate that matches the gang count and the device type will fit on a standard US electrical box.
Color and Finish
White is the most common and matches most outlet and switch hardware. Ivory is a warmer off-white that pairs well with cream or warm-painted walls. For a clean modern look, a single finish across every plate in the room makes the whole space feel intentional.
